ACTIVITIES FOR MEMBERS AND VISITORS

MTGS hosts a genealogical or historical lecture the third Saturday of January, March, May, July, and September at the Knowles Center, 174 Rains Avenue, Nashville, TN.

The general public is invited to attend. The talk by the featured speaker is usually preceded by a few short announcements. Our meeting time is generally about an hour and thirty minutes. About a third of our programs concern subjects that pertain particularly to genealogical research, such as "Genealogy on the Internet - The Basics," or "Oral History and Interviewing Techniques." Other meetings are of more general interest, many on a historical theme, including such subjects as "Southern Claims Commission, a new Civil War Research Tool," or "War of 1812 Genealogy." Still others touch on local interest and have included "Research at the Tennessee State Archives," and "Open House at the Nashville Metro Archives." The lectures are presented by members as well as regionally or nationally recognized speakers.

Fall Seminars: In November we host an all-day seminar. Speakers of national and international standing present subjects of general research interest to historians and/or genealogists. Past topics of these one-day programs have included: "A Workshop on Genealogical Problem Solving; Finding Your Immigrant Ancestors and Telling Their Stories." A small fee is charged which includes lunch.

MTGS Journal: Our Journal . . .The Middle Tennessee Journal of Genealogy & History, an award-winning quarterly with articles of genealogical and historical interest. Little-known Tennessee records are published and indexed, along with family genealogies, Bible records and material submitted by members. Book reviews are published January, April, July and October. Issues are mailed to all members; back issues may be purchased by the general public.

Directions: From I-65 north or south, take the Wedgewood Exit 81 East (or from Franklin Road) go east on Wedgewood to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds entrance. The Center is through the gate on the left after entering the Fairgrounds entrance. The name of the building above the porte-cochere is the Patricia Hart Building which is visible from Wedgewood Avenue.
